About Broken Rules

Broken Rules is a game development studio located in Vienna, Austria.

Our games focus on originality, simplicity, refined game mechanics and rich interactivity.

Games are cultural achievements.
We strive to make our games new and meaningful experiences.

The studio was founded in 2009 by Felix, Jan and Peter.

They created the first version of And Yet It Moves during their studies at university and released it as a full game in the same year they founded the company.

The founding team grew in 2010 when Clemens and Martin joined.

Together, they created Chasing Aurora (2012), Secrets of Raetikon (2014), Old Man's Journey (2017) and worked on a number of collaborations.

In co-operation with Josef Wiesner, they run a public game exhibition space called zamSpielen.

The Founders

Felix {t} is our CEO and a level 80 game design wizard. He's the only team member who has a master title in Game Design. He is mostly responsible for game design and management, but also keeps the vision of the company and embodies our independent spirit the most.

Jack-of-all-trades is an understatement when it comes to Jan {t|w} A coder and system designer at heart, Jan acted as the Audio Director for Chasing Aurora and Secrets of Raetikon. He keeps our server infrastructure in check while having the most surprising ideas when it comes to game design.

Martin {t} handled business development and the marketing side of Broken Rules up until 2015, as well as being the lead architect of our in-house game editor GinkEd. He is doctor of computer sciences and has a past as a new media artist. Currently he is working at ITU Copenhagen.

Peter {t} is the technical lead and CFO. Peter loves physics and raw playfulness - in games and in sports. Peter is a ++coder and the king of templates. He's a combines the skills of a builder and an architect of destruction in one person.

Clemens {t|w} is Broken Rules' creative director and lead artist. After creating the distinct visuals for Chasing Aurora and Secrets of Raetikon, he has been working with various developers around the globe on titles such as Flywrench, Darknet and 20XX.
His most recent work is the art and creative direction of Old Man's Journey.

Peter Houska

Peter, usually referred to as Husky, was our supporting tech engineer. He ported Chasing Aurora to the Wii U and is an all-around top-notch whizz kid when it gets down and dirty with any kind of low level code. He helped bring No Man's Sky to the PS4 and is currently working with our fellow colleagues at Mi'Pu'Mi.

Andrea Schmoll

Andy {t} is a game designer by trade and lead working with us during the development of Chasing Aurora, leading the user tests as well as acting as handling all of our social channels. Her adventures took her from Arkane Studios to Ubisoft Toronto, where she currently works as a systems designer.

Josef Who

Josef {t} has been accompanying Broken Rules since the studio's founding times. He worked as a level designer on And Yet It Moves and Chasing Aurora, acts as the main organiser & curator for zamSpielen and works at the local game culture shop Subotron. He is one of the co-creators of CHESTO - At the Checkout. He currently works as a producer and has the oversight of bringing Old Man's Journey to new platforms.

Christoph Binder

Christoph {t} worked with Felix, Peter and Jan on And Yet It Moves from 2006 until it's release in 2009. He created all of the audio for the game and was involved in game and level design.
